L = Luneta Park

Luneta Park

If there's one important place in Manila, it has got to be this - the Luneta Park. Marked as kilometer zero, this is where the remains of the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal is laid to rest. Known before as the Bagumbayan, this is the place where he was executed because of rebelling with the Spanish forces through his novels, "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo" at a tender age of 35 years old.

See those two men in brown uniform? They are there to guard the monument 24/7. There are rotations, of course, but the time, I don't know. Anyway, no tourist is allowed to come near the monument, so people can only take pictures from afar. To be honest, it was just the third time that I visited the park - it's quite far from us, but the extensive grounds of the park are perfect for picnics and family get together. I am not sure of this anymore, but there's a skating rink (just roller skates and/or roller blades) nearby as well.

Shot August 09 of this year, this was the last stop of our heritage shoot / get together I had with my brother and some of the photo enthusiasts here in the Philippines that are part of the Litratong Pinoy meme. At that time, the president of Switzerland was here in the Philippines, hence the Swiss Flags.

Thanks for your comment. I feel I'm learning a lot about other cultures through blogging. Maybe school-children should do it!

I love photos of monuments because I'd probably never get the chance to see them in person. Thanks for posting this one.

The site must mean a lot to your nation. The rest of the world knows little of the Spanish connection.

Great L posts. I am always sorry when people can't approach a monument. Guards should stop people from harming the monument, but not keep them at bay!

Anyway, I left a comment for you on my blog, so please check!

I missed that park. You know I've been there once long time ago in the 80's. Probably there's lot of improvement now! Thanks for the comment Jenn!

State Parks and monuments are always so impressive, aren't they? And the flags make it all very attractive somehow.

I'm surprised they guard it so well.
